The Pawn Wine Co. had its beginning in 2002 out of necessity when vignerons and winemakers Tom Keelan and his wife Rebecca Willson had a small parcel of fruit deemed ‘not good enough’ by a large buyer. They had now become mere Pawns in the global wine game, doomed to be played and ultimately sacrificed.
Rolling up their sleeves, they decided to demonstrate what can be achieved by growing the right varieties within their ideal locations. They set out to make small hand selected parcels of wine from alternative varieties grown in the Adelaide Hills and Langhorne Creek. Having noticed alternative grape varieties being used as mere blending tools, and that the potential of ‘old world’ wine styles was not being allowed to shine, they began their crusade.
Every war results from the struggle for markets and spheres of influence, and many are a crusade to save goodness from evil. A crusade is, simply put, something that's bigger than ones' self. It's a 'cause' with an impact that reaches beyond personal wants and needs.
The Pawn Wine Co engaged Chad Holman with a tight design brief, to make these wines sing as loud as the wines themselves.
Inspired by a pawn’s historical relation to the near invulnerability of the pikemen of the middle-ages, a broader chess theme took hold in keeping with the brand's origin story, providing each varietal with its own unique personality.
The shape of ancient scale armour plates forms the shape of heavy weighted natural grain paper stock, debossed by bold illustrative lines and highlighted with touches of varietal colour.
The ruling tier, embossed in full armour on natural grain Cotone paper stock and foiled in the strength of matt silver, connecting with the top embossed silver capsule and complimenting metallic branded neck band.
